Intensive Outpatient Treatment

What Is Our OCD Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOT) option?

Are you ready for a level of therapy that truly matches your needs? If you’re finding that once-a-week sessions aren’t pushing you far enough—or fast enough—it may be time to raise the bar. Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who want more than incremental progress. With structured, short-term, one-on-one support, you’ll have the accountability and intensity needed to complete exposures consistently and break through obstacles holding you back. This is therapy that matches your ambition: rigorous, focused, and built to accelerate meaningful change—without the need for full-time residential care

  • Treatment: You’ll work one-on-one with a licensed OCD specialist for the entirety of your program. After completing an extensive intake process and collaborating with your therapist on an individualized treatment plan, each session you will be engaged in education, skills training, and evidence-based behavioral therapies. No group sessions, no distractions—just highly-personalized care.

  • Time Commitment: The program involves 5 hours per week over 3 weeks, for a total of 15 hours. Sessions last 60–90 minutes, and additional weeks can be added if needed.

  • Format: Primarily in-person, with limited virtual options as needed. At Soultality, we see the value of in-person one-on-one treatment available in the heart of Harvard Square. While extenuating circumstances may call for some virtual treatment, we will make every effort to make this a primarily in-person program so as to best fit your needs.

Who would benefit from iot?

This program may be a great fit for you if:

  • Even though you’re working hard, once-a-week therapy isn’t helping you move forward.

  • You need a more accelerated path to recovery, so that you can get back to school, work, or family responsibilities.

  • You’re preparing to enter into, or transition out of, a higher level of care.

  • You want to experience condensed, expert OCD treatment tailored specifically to your needs and goals.

  • Your schedule allows for you to focus intensively on treatment for a short period of time, such as through school breaks, sabbatical, or between-season slow periods.

Whether you’re dealing with contamination fears, harm obsessions, intrusive thoughts, compulsive checking, avoidance, or mental rituals, our IOT program is designed to help you move forward with confidence.

Our TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY

Our approach is rooted in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold standard treatment for OCD and related disorders. Our clinicians are also specialized in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an additional evidence-based practice for treating OCD and related disorders, as well as other modalities such as mindfulness-based approaches, Motivational Interviewing, health coaching, and more. As specialists, we know it is crucial to include:

  • An intake process that helps us see the big picture.

  • Appropriate scaffolding, skill-building, and motivational work prior to beginning behavioral treatment.

  • Values-based exposure work that confronts what’s getting in the way of living the life you want to live.

  • Practical, relevant psychoeducation designed to make you an expert of your condition and its treatment.

  • A whole-person focus that takes into account all aspects of wellness and functioning.

  • If desired, family support and education - so that the context you live in can become a support.

How Does it work?

Our program is designed to fit your needs. It includes:

  • A detailed intake process — including a combination of standardized and proprietary assessments, along with a 90-minute intake session — designed to make your treatment as effective and personalized as possible.

  • A comprehensive Treatment Proposal document, received within one week of intake, that includes:

    • A detailed Case Conceptualization illustrating your current situation and detailing relevant bio/psycho/social factors.

    • A Treatment Plan inclusive of your goals, proposed interventions, and program completion criteria

  • The 3-week Soultality OCD and YOU Information and Resource Packet, covering the following topics:

    • Week 1: Understanding OCD: Features, Patterns, and Core Concepts

    • Week 2: Becoming an Expert: Treatment Models, Non-Engagement, and Motivation

    • Week 3: Planning Ahead: Increasing Efficacy, Embracing the Exposure Lifestyle, and Prevention Planning

  • 15 hours of one-on-one ERP and ACT-focused therapy and coaching, spread across 3 weeks (with the option to extend, if desired). Our curriculum includes:

    • Week 1: Psychoeducation, treatment planning, goal setting, and skill building. Optional family support and education session.

    • Week 2: Intensive exposure work and behavioral treatment, with continued psychoeducation and treatment plan adjustments as needed.

    • Week 3: Ongoing ERP, progress reviews, discharge planning, and preparation for long-term success.

  • Collateral communication and collaboration with your other relevant treatment providers.

  • An intentional transfer back to a regular outpatient therapist, with the option for ad hoc ERP sessions as needed with a coach or therapist at Soultality.
